King Charles has expressed his concern over the Alberta separatist movement during a meeting with Indigenous leaders at Buckingham Palace. According to BBC News, Grand Chief Joey Pete of the Confederacy of Treaty 6 First Nations highlighted the meeting’s significance, emphasizing the threat the movement poses to longstanding treaty agreements between First Nations and the Crown.

The grassroots separatist initiative in Alberta is currently gathering signatures to force a succession referendum in October. Indigenous leaders in the province have expressed strong opposition to the movement, with some filing legal challenges against it. Grand Chief Pete noted that the King was very interested in what they had to say and committed to learning more.

During the meeting, First Nations chiefs requested that King Charles issue a Royal Proclamation to reaffirm their treaties with the Crown and the rights associated with them. Pete described the meeting as significant, stating that it represented treaty partners engaging as equals.

Laws governing the relationship between Canada’s First Nations and the government are outlined in treaties signed with the Crown, some predating Canada’s formation. The Sturgeon Lake Cree Nation has initiated legal action against the Alberta government, claiming that the petition for a referendum violates their treaty rights. The lawsuit asserts that Alberta’s secession cannot occur without First Nation consent to change a party to Treaty No. 8.

In a recent gathering at the Alberta legislature, First Nations leaders called on Premier Danielle Smith to quash any possible succession referendum. They also sought a no-confidence vote against her government, although this proposal was quickly dismissed by her party. Alberta’s Indigenous relations minister, Rajan Sawhney, indicated a willingness to meet with Chief Pete regarding the allegations of treaty violations but disagreed with the claims at this time.
