According to Allafrica, the Kordofan Observatory has warned of signs of imminent famine in several parts of Sudan’s Kordofan region, where fighting, road closures and disrupted aid access are worsening food insecurity.

The observatory said families in El Nahud, Wad Banda, El Khuwei and Muglad are increasingly relying on ambaz, the residue from pressing groundnuts for oil that is normally used as animal feed. Residents’ testimonies point to a sharp fall in income sources as living conditions deteriorate and food prices rise.

A malwa of millet has reached 35,000 Sudanese pounds, placing it beyond the reach of many households, the observatory said. Demand for ambaz has also increased, making it scarce in local markets and lifting its price to about SDG 10,000 per malwa.

The observatory linked the worsening crisis to recent fighting around El Obeid and military build-ups by both sides of the conflict. It said insecurity has disrupted trade, blocked goods from reaching parts of Kordofan, limited farmers’ access to their land and coincided with late rains.

It called on both sides to secure trade and humanitarian corridors and ensure civilians receive food and aid. The observatory also urged authorities in Khartoum and Northern State to reverse measures it said restrict goods moving to Rapid Support Forces-controlled areas, while calling on the Rapid Support Forces to remove levy checkpoints and other barriers that raise prices. Humanitarian organisations were urged to prioritise food, healthcare and medicines for affected residents.
