NASCAR is mourning the loss of two-time Cup Series champion Kyle Busch, whose cause of death has been confirmed as severe pneumonia that turned into sepsis. According to ABC News, Busch died this week in a hospital just days after racing.
The Busch family released a statement detailing the medical evaluation that concluded the rapid progression of the illness led to overwhelming complications. They have requested privacy during this difficult time.
Busch, who was 41 years old, experienced shortness of breath and coughed up blood the day before his death. He was hospitalized shortly after and was unable to compete in the upcoming Coca-Cola 600 race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
With 234 wins across NASCAR’s top three series, Busch is regarded as one of the sport’s greatest drivers, securing the Cup Series championship in 2015 and 2019. He is survived by his wife Samantha, their two children, and his older brother, Kurt Busch, a NASCAR Hall of Fame member.
