According to The Guardian,

Kylie Minogue has been confirmed to perform at the AFL grand final, marking a long-awaited return to her hometown of Melbourne. The pop icon expressed her excitement about the opportunity, stating, “As a Melburnian, I’m so excited to be coming home for the biggest day in the Aussie sporting calendar.” This year’s event will take place at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) in September.

The AFL has pursued Minogue for years to headline the pre-game entertainment, a role previously filled by international acts like Robbie Williams and Snoop Dogg. The league has faced criticism in the past for its choices, particularly after the controversial performance by Snoop Dogg last year, which led to calls for more Australian musicians to be featured.

Minogue, who has sold more than 80 million records globally and won numerous awards, including 18 Aria Awards and two Grammys, is seen as a fitting choice for this high-profile event. Matt Gudinski, the chief executive of Mushroom Group, which represents Minogue, emphasized her status as an iconic Australian artist.

AFL CEO Andrew Dillon echoed this sentiment, noting that Minogue has been on their wish list for a long time. The excitement surrounding her performance is palpable, with Dillon mentioning a recent content shoot at the MCG that already hinted at the anticipation for the grand final.

This year’s AFL grand final promises to be a significant event, with Minogue not only performing but also joining the crowd of 100,000 fans at the ‘G’ to celebrate the sport she loves.
