An elected Minns Labor Government will commit $500,000 per year to support Rugby League competitions in far west and regional NSW.

The commitment will ensure the continued delivery and growth of the Barwon Darling, Outback Rugby League and Tag Competitions allowing communities across the region to benefit from all the associated social outcomes that they bring.

The partnership would happen in conjunction with NSW Rugby League (NSWRL) and the Murdi Paaki Regional Rugby League Council Inc.

The funding will ensure seasonal length competitions for Senior men, Senior women and Youth aged competitions and Junior Gala days will also be conducted for participants under 12 years.

Importantly, the programs will also aim to empower volunteers with targeted education and mentoring in Sports Trainer and coaching to help develop the next generation of athletes in the region.

The funding will cover expenses such as:

  • Junior Player Travel
  • Club Insurances
  • Match day expenses including Referees and referee travel cost
  • Community Engagement Programs
  • Junior Equipment Funding and targeted programs
  • Community Well Being Programs including off season Mixed Tag competitions

NSW Labor Leader Chris Minns said:

“This commitment from NSW Labor will ensure that kids in regional, rural and remote towns can keep playing the game they love”

“Sometimes the difference between a club or a competition running can be as simple as having funding for a bus or for insurance.”

“This funding isn’t just good for sport, it is good for community engagement and building the life skills children need to succeed”

NSW Shadow Minister for Sport Julia Finn said:

“Rising fuel costs have made it much harder for families to take kids to sport, especially in the far west.

“This funding will be crucial for communities to ensure they can keep clubs and competitions running”

“I am proud that a Minns Labor government is committing to this initiative.”
