Three men, including David Taylor, the husband of Labour MP Joani Reid, have been released on bail following their arrests on suspicion of spying for China, according to BBC News. The arrests were made by counter-terrorism officers in London and Wales.

David Taylor, 39, along with two unnamed men aged 43 and 68, are accused of assisting a foreign intelligence service. The police conducted searches at various locations associated with the suspects, including properties in London, East Kilbride, and Cardiff.

Following the incident, Joani Reid stated she was “not part of” her husband’s business activities and had never seen anything to make her suspect he had “broken any law”. Taylor has previously served as an adviser to Welsh Labour politicians and was a candidate for the North Wales police and crime commissioner.

The arrests fall under section three of the National Security Act, enacted in 2023, which targets individuals allegedly working against UK interests. Commander Helen Flanagan of Counter Terrorism Policing London assured that there is no imminent or direct threat linked to these arrests.

In light of the situation, Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle has issued a reminder to parliamentary staff about the persistent risks of Chinese espionage, emphasizing the need for vigilance and adherence to guidelines for reporting foreign state activities.
