Launceston City Mission has secured development approval for a six-storey building that will include 48 social and affordable homes. The project, which is set to be built by 2028 on the corner of Wellington and Frederick streets, aims to provide easy access to support services located in the lower levels of the building. According to ABC News, the initiative is a significant step toward addressing housing insecurity in the region.
The $30 million project has garnered both support and concerns from community members. Some residents expressed worries about potential anti-social behavior, the building’s height, and the adequacy of parking spaces, which number only eight on-site. Despite these objections, the council approved the development, with Councillor Alex Britton noting it as a substantial investment in tackling housing issues.
Launceston City Mission’s chief executive officer, Jo Fearman, highlighted the pressing need for the project, citing over 500 individuals currently waiting for single-bedroom housing in Launceston. She emphasized the benefits of placing social housing in the CBD, allowing residents easier access to essential services, supermarkets, and transport options.
The project has received funding from various sources, including $11 million from the federal government and $8 million from Homes Tasmania. Fearman anticipates construction will commence later this year, with the first tenants expected to move in during 2028. Despite concerns raised about potential anti-social behavior, Fearman clarified that the development is focused on stable long-term residents, not crisis accommodation.
Parking availability has also been a significant point of contention. The council planners noted that the development is 24 short of usual parking requirements but deemed the situation reasonable, as many tenants may not own cars. Sarah Henley from Loreto Community Housing, which will manage the tenancies, assured that prospective tenants will be informed about the lack of on-site parking prior to moving in.
