According to ABC News, Laurie Daley has stepped down as New South Wales State of Origin coach after leading the Blues to a series victory over Queensland. The NSW Rugby League said Daley officially left the role following speculation over his future.
Daley said coaching the NSW Blues had been “an absolute honour and privilege”, whether as a player or coach. He said the side faced challenges during the 2026 series but the players came together and produced their best display in Game Three in Brisbane to secure what he called a memorable series win. NSW beat Queensland 30-12 at Lang Park to seal the series.
The former coach thanked supporters for their passion and support, adding that he could not think of a better way to leave with the Shield back in NSW. The 2026 success was Daley’s second Origin series win across two stints in charge of the Blues.
NSWRL chief executive David Trodden praised Daley’s service to the state as both a player and coach. Trodden said Daley was the first NSW captain to lead the state to three consecutive series wins, from 1992 to 1994, and credited him with ending Queensland’s eight-year winning streak as coach in 2014. He said Daley had also guided the Blues through adversity in 2026 and deserved to leave the Origin arena as a hero.
