The Lebanese flag is flying high outside of Council Chambers in Bankstown on 8 May for 10 days, marking one month since one of the deadliest days that Lebanon has witnessed in the recent conflict.

The community gathered for a flag-raising ceremony today, with attendance from Mr Raymond El Chamlati (Consul General of Lebanon), Mrs Sarah Al Dirani (Consul), Councillors Khal Asfour, Sherin Akther, Saud Abu-Samen, Jennifer Walther, former Deputy Mayor Khodr Saleh OAM, former Councillor Nadia Saleh and many community leaders.

Mayor Bilal El-Hayek and Clr Hady Saleh also led the event and spoke about honouring the innocent lives lost in the recent conflict and the need to stand together with the more than 55,000 strong local Lebanese-Australian community.

This originates from a motion led by Clr Hady Saleh in last month’s Council Meeting.

The Australian flag was also raised alongside the Lebanese flag, truly demonstrating Canterbury-Bankstown as the home of modern, multicultural Australia.
