The Liberal Democrats have announced a proposal to offer cash rewards of up to £5,000 for tip-offs that lead to successful prosecutions of individuals involved in illegal waste dumping. This initiative aims to assist council enforcement officers in addressing what the party describes as an “environmental emergency” caused by fly-tipping.
According to BBC News, the party also plans to encourage local authorities to charge only £5 for bulky waste collections, making it easier for households to dispose of waste responsibly. The proposed reduced charges could be funded by increasing fines for fly-tippers, with the minimum penalty suggested to rise to £2,500.
As fly-tipping continues to be a significant issue, with local councils in England reporting a 9% increase in incidents to 1.26 million last year, the Liberal Democrats have made this issue a central focus of their campaign leading up to the local elections next month. The cost of clearing up large-scale fly-tipping incidents has reached £19.3 million.
The party’s plans come alongside similar initiatives from various councils, although their proposed rewards significantly exceed those currently offered. For instance, Labour-run Merton council provides £100 for witness reports that lead to fines, while Conservative-run East Hampshire District Council offers up to £500. The Lib Dems believe that their approach will not only deter illegal dumping but also encourage responsible waste disposal practices among residents.
