Liverpool Regional Museum is hosting a major exhibition dedicated to the area’s Chilean community titled Exilio (Exiled) Chile to South West Sydney.

Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun said it is appropriate that one of the nation’s most multicultural cities is the host for an exhibition dedicated to those who fled persecution.

“The 1973 Chilean Military Coup d’état forced a whole generation into exile,” Mayor Mannoun said.

“One of the darkest chapters in the history of Latin America caused thousands of Chileans to be kidnapped, tortured, disappeared and murdered.

“The geopolitics leading up to the coup and generational after-effects of trauma and loss are presented in archives, artefacts and ‘Arpilleras’ – a communal folk-art process created by women which depict pictorial narratives and testimonies of protest in brightly coloured textiles.

“The Chilean community is only one of many communities that have found a safe, peaceful and comfortable home in Liverpool.”

The exhibition includes events for school children, presentations, and film premieres.
