According to ABC News, a drive-by shooting outside a boxing event at Fitzys Loganholme, south of Brisbane, has become a homicide investigation after 19-year-old Vana-Reese Schuster-Togiatau died in hospital.
SHDW Boxing was holding its annual fight night on Saturday, October 24, when a Mitsubishi ASX without number plates approached the venue’s passenger drop-off zone at about 8:15pm. Police say two masked gunmen fired at least six shots from the front passenger window into a crowd gathered outside.
Four people were shot. Ms Schuster-Togiatau, from Jimboomba, suffered gunshot wounds to her head and neck. Zachary Uchtman, 38, was shot in the abdomen and arm, while Brodie Blackwood, 27, and Kane Barrett, 37, were shot in the abdomen. Blackwood and Barrett were released from hospital on October 27 and 28, while Uchtman remained in treatment.
Police arrived three minutes after the shooting, as bystanders and event attendees gave first aid and moved others inside the venue. The Mitsubishi was later found burnt out in Waterford West, and police say CCTV showed a second vehicle collecting the two men. A dual-cab utility was also set alight later that night near Mount Tamborine and is believed to be linked to the getaway.
More than 80 detectives are investigating and police are seeking at least three people. They are examining whether the attack involved pre-planning and have not ruled out links to organised crime, though officers said there was no indication the victims were targeted. Police Minister Dan Purdie urged anyone with information to come forward, saying police were working to identify those responsible.
