According to The Guardian, Louisa Young is continuing her aunt Elizabeth Jane Howard’s Cazalet Chronicles in a planned trilogy. Young said the decision initially appeared as a joking postscript in an email to her agent, but gained momentum after Howard’s daughter, Young’s cousin, gave her blessing. Young also found a message in which Howard had called one of her novels “a triumph.”

Howard’s five-volume family saga began with The Light Years in 1990, opening in 1937, and concluded with All Change, set at Christmas 1958. The books follow three young female cousins — Polly, Clary and Louise — alongside 52 other named characters between London and a family home in Sussex. The series became a worldwide phenomenon, selling millions of copies and remaining in print.

Young said she reread the novels while considering how to take the story forward. Among the unresolved threads she identified were the relationship between half-siblings Juliet and Neville, the future of Villy, Rachel’s life as a lesbian, and the fate of Louise’s abandoned son Sebastian. She also noted the challenge of continuing a narrative spanning about 500,000 words and facing readers devoted to Howard’s work.

The writer said she will retain Howard’s structure of interlocking sections told from individual characters’ points of view, while allowing her own language and generation to move the narrative forward. Young described the continuation not as a pastiche, imitation or homage, but as “a living story,” arguing that the characters’ lives had continued beyond the final published volume.
