According to BBC News, Spain head coach Luis de la Fuente has agreed a contract extension that will keep him in the role until 2032. The 65-year-old’s previous deal had been due to expire in 2028.

De la Fuente led Spain to their fourth European Championship title in 2024 before guiding the team to World Cup success this summer. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 after extra time in July to win their second men’s World Cup crown, having overcome England 2-1 in the European final two years earlier.

The new agreement means De la Fuente is set to lead Spain’s World Cup defence in 2030. Spain will co-host the tournament with Portugal and Morocco, while matches are also scheduled in Uruguay, Argentina and Paraguay as part of the competition’s 100th-anniversary celebrations.

De la Fuente replaced Luis Enrique in December 2022 after Spain’s last-16 exit at that year’s World Cup. Since taking charge, his side have lost twice in 41 competitive matches and won three trophies, including the 2022-23 Uefa Nations League. Spain were runners-up to Portugal in the 2024-25 Nations League.

RFEF president Rafael Louzan said at the World Football Summit in Madrid that De la Fuente’s “results speak for themselves, as does his work”. Spain’s next match is against England at Wembley on 26 September in the opening game of the 2026-27 Nations League.
