According to Allafrica, Malawi will play Cameroon in the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations final after the Scorchers beat Algeria 3-1 and the Indomitable Lionesses eliminated hosts Morocco in a penalty shootout. Malawi are in their first-ever TotalEnergies CAF WAFCON final, while Cameroon have reached the decisive match for a fourth time.

Captain Tabitha Chawinga and Temwa Chawinga combined for all three Malawi goals in the semi-final. Algeria were reduced to 10 players early when Morgane Belkhiter was sent off. Tabitha opened the scoring in the 33rd minute with an acrobatic effort that went onto the crossbar and into the net. Temwa doubled the lead shortly before half-time after rounding the goalkeeper.

Algeria responded in the 60th minute when Ikram Adjabi scored after Marine Dafeur’s free-kick created a loose ball. Tabitha then completed her brace, beating her marker before scoring with her left foot. Malawi held on for the 3-1 victory and will now compete for their first continental crown in their debut tournament appearance.

Cameroon and Morocco drew 0-0 after 120 minutes before Cameroon won the shootout 3-1. Marie Ngah, Rose Bella and Myriam Nyadjou converted for Cameroon, while Hanane Aït El Haj was Morocco’s only successful taker. Morocco had a chance to win in the 118th minute, but Fatima Tagnaout missed a penalty. The result ended the hosts’ bid for a third consecutive WAFCON final and a first African title on home soil.

Cameroon had lost each of their previous three WAFCON penalty shootouts, including against Nigeria in the 2018 semi-final. Their run to the final has included a 1-0 quarter-final win over defending champions Nigeria and the shootout victory over Morocco. The final now pairs a debutant nation pursuing its first title with a former powerhouse seeking to return to the top of African women’s football.
