According to BBC News, a 35-year-old man has been arrested after the death of a nine-year-old girl who was found with serious injuries in Arbroath. Police are treating her death as suspicious.

Officers were called to Elliot Industrial Estate shortly after midnight. The girl was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died.

Police Scotland said the girl’s family were being supported by specialist officers and that inquiries were continuing. A police forensics tent has been erected at the scene, where a cordon has also been put in place.

A floral tribute was placed at the scene. Arbroath East and Lunan councillor Lois Speed described it as a “heartbreaking morning” and said people were shocked and saddened.

Speed said that people’s thoughts were with the girl, her family and everyone close to them, adding that people would be thinking about how difficult the situation must be for those directly affected.
