According to ABC News, a man was arrested after a mother was repeatedly stabbed and her 10-year-old son was punched outside Victoria Police headquarters on Spencer Street in Melbourne’s CBD. Police said the family, visiting Melbourne from Phillip Island, was walking with the woman’s three children at about 1pm when the attack occurred.

Police were told a man punched the boy in the upper body before initially walking away, then turning back and grabbing the mother in a headlock. Superintendent Zorka Dunstan said he repeatedly stabbed her with a pair of scissors. The woman suffered injuries to her back and shoulders, while she and her son were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

Passers-by intervened, with one person pulling the man from the woman before two others helped restrain him. Superintendent Dunstan described their actions as heroic and said their intervention may have prevented a worse outcome. Police arrived quickly and arrested a 27-year-old Sunshine West man.

Police said the parties did not know each other and the motive was unknown. The other two children were not physically injured but witnessed the attack. The arrested man had not yet been interviewed, and detectives were to examine whether mental health was an issue. Police said he was known to authorities in Victoria and Western Australia, while the investigation continued.
