Arabic version: اعتقال رجل بعد تهديدات في مكتب بيزلي
According to ABC News, police arrested a man after reports that he made verbal threats while armed with “nunchucks” at Western Australian state MP Hannah Beazley’s electorate office in Victoria Park. Police said they were called to a disturbance at the Albany Highway office at about 1:15pm.
Police located the 56-year-old man in nearby Bentley and apprehended him. He is assisting police with their inquiries. No-one was injured in the incident, police said.
Beazley described the event as a “confronting situation” in a statement. She said a member of the public entered the office armed with a weapon and that she had spoken with staff, who were “understandably shaken and upset” by what happened.
The MP said she did not know the motivation behind the incident and would not comment further while it was subject to a police investigation. She said she was focusing on staff welfare, adding that people should be able to go about their lives without fear of violence at work, at home and in the community.
The incident came two days after an attack on federal Indi MP Helen Haines, who remained in a critical condition in hospital after being run over outside her electorate office. State political party leaders were due to meet government, police and parliamentary representatives the following day to discuss safety issues.
Premier Roger Cook said security at the parliamentary precinct, electorate offices and people’s homes was under discussion. He said the meeting would provide an opportunity to consider recent security improvements and further actions that could improve arrangements.
