A 52-year-old man has been charged with affray following a violent altercation on a school bus traveling between Wagga Wagga and Junee in southern New South Wales. The incident, which left students shaken, occurred on Friday afternoon as children were making their way home from school.
According to ABC News, witnesses reported that the bus driver pulled over on Byrnes Road after the fight escalated. A 61-year-old man was assaulted by the younger man, leading to significant injuries that required medical attention.
Twelve-year-old student Lilith McKay described the chaotic scene, noting that the adults had been disruptive from the moment she boarded the bus. She recounted a year 11 student intervening to protect younger passengers during the fight, which involved choking and headbutting.
The driver stopped the bus near an abattoir, where police arrived shortly after. At the scene on Byrnes Road, paramedics treated a 61-year-old man before he was taken to Junee Hospital. The 52-year-old suspect was arrested later that evening and charged with two counts of affray and two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. He has been refused bail and is set to appear in Wagga Wagga Local Court on June 29.
Parents and community members have voiced concerns about the presence of adults on school buses, particularly when they engage in antisocial behavior. Some have suggested that alternative transport arrangements should be considered to ensure the safety of school-aged children.
