According to ABC News, a 37-year-old man died shortly after being arrested at Clayton railway station in Melbourne’s south-east following an armed confrontation with police.

Local police and Protective Service Officers were called to the station at about 7:10pm on Sunday after reports of a highly agitated man. Officers arrived and found the man armed with a knife, police said.

Police said the man was pacing on the concourse before moving onto tracks near a platform. The area was cordoned off and trains were halted while officers attempted to negotiate with him.

The man then advanced towards officers with the knife, police said. Officers tried non-lethal tactical tools before a Critical Incident Response Team arrived to negotiate. The man was taken into custody and became unresponsive shortly afterwards.

Ambulance paramedics provided immediate medical care but could not revive him. Homicide Squad detectives will investigate under the oversight of Professional Standards Command. Cranbourne and Pakenham line services remained suspended, with buses replacing trains between Oakleigh and Westall.
