According to BBC News, a 41-year-old man from Eastbourne died after a sign fell at the Big Church Festival at Wiston Park, near Steyning in West Sussex. Sussex Police said officers were called to the Christian festival at about 15:38 BST on Friday. Six other people were injured.

South East Coast Ambulance Service said four of those injured were taken to local hospitals for further treatment. Two people suffered serious injuries. Organisers said they were “devastated” and cancelled the remainder of the festival, which began on Friday and had been due to continue until Sunday.

The organisers said they were working with emergency services, police and the Health and Safety Executive to establish the circumstances of the incident. Sussex Police said the Health and Safety Executive and the local authority had been informed, and urged anyone with information to contact the force.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Dame Sarah Mullally, said she was “sad and shocked” by the fatal incident and prayed for the man’s family and loved ones, those receiving treatment, healthcare workers, festival-goers, staff and organisers. The Reverend James Di Castiglione, rector of the parish of Chanctonbury, described the incident as a “huge shock to everyone locally”. The Salvation Army in Hove opened its hall for people unable to get home after the cancellation.
