According to BBC News, Manchester United have decided that Michael Carrick will remain in charge for Saturday’s trip to Chelsea, despite mounting pressure after the home defeat by Bournemouth. Carrick’s side are 16th in the table, and no timescale has been set for him to reverse the situation.
The club had been expected to make an announcement on Monday after the loss at Old Trafford, but no decision was made. Carrick arrived at Carrington at 07:30 GMT on Tuesday and took training as normal before United sources confirmed he would lead the team at Stamford Bridge.
United then face Roma in a crucial Champions League match three days after the Chelsea game, followed by a Premier League meeting with Aston Villa before a two-week international break. The break is viewed as an obvious point at which the club could assess whether a coaching change is needed.
Senior figures believe the squad, which they consider capable of qualifying for the Champions League, is underperforming and should share responsibility. One player told BBC Sport: “The feeling is that we all want to put it right. Players, staff, everyone.”
Carrick had already been under scrutiny following a 4-1 defeat at Como on 21 October. Captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the manager’s tactics after that match and was later dropped to the bench against Bournemouth. BBC Sport reported that Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were among options explored by United, while Antonio Conte is willing to discuss the role, though there has been no direct contact.
