According to BBC News, Manchester United are considering whether to strengthen at left-back before the transfer window closes on 1 September, although expectations of a signing are being treated cautiously.

The club have completed a £155m midfield revamp with Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans joining Michael Carrick’s squad. Attention has consequently turned to left-back, where Luke Shaw started all 38 Premier League matches in the 2025-26 season and has started 43 of United’s past 44 league games.

Shaw’s previous injury record and a busier schedule have contributed to calls for another option. United are keen on Newcastle defender Lewis Hall, but Newcastle do not want to sell and a major offer would be required. United have also been linked with Racing Santander’s Jorge Salinas and Barcelona’s Alejandro Balde.

United have existing alternatives. Diogo Dalot and Noussair Mazraoui have played on the left, while Baleba has previously featured at full-back for Brighton. Harry Amass was Shaw’s pre-season back-up, though the 19-year-old was not included in the squad for the trip to Hull and is expected to leave either permanently or on loan.

A significant sale could alter the situation, but Marcus Rashford is set to wear the number nine shirt and Manuel Ugarte’s expected departure was halted by a World Cup injury. Joshua Zirkzee appears surplus to requirements, though uncertainty over Amad Diallo’s fitness could affect whether Serie A interest results in a sale.
