Matildas star Sam Kerr will miss the Paris Olympics as she recovers from an ACL injury sustained during a training camp in Morocco in January. Any slim hopes of Kerr’s return have faded, as recovery from reconstructive surgery can take between six months to one year.

Kerr isn’t the only Matilda set to miss the Paris Olympics. Attacker Amy Sayer will also remain on the sidelines recovering from an injury, along with Katrina Gorry and Aivi Luik. “Unfortunately, we have had a very tough period with injuries,” Gustavsson said.

Kerr, the leading goal scorer of the Matildas with 69 goals, will be a crucial loss for the team. However, the Matildas have Michelle Heyman, who showcased her talent and skills by scoring four goals against Uzbekistan earlier this year in the Women’s Olympic Qualifying Asia Tournament. Heyman could possibly take over Kerr’s position.

The Paris Olympics are set to begin on July 26th.
