According to ABC News, Matthew James Cox will stand trial on two murder charges over the alleged deaths of his wife, Tayla Black, and their 11-week-old daughter, Murphy, at a Rockhampton home.
Cox, now 34, is charged with murdering Ms Black, 30, and the baby. The alleged murders took place on August 8, 2023. Cox presented himself at a Brisbane police station on August 10, 2023.
Rockhampton police discovered the bodies at a Bean Street property in Park Avenue after being alerted by Brisbane police. A committal hearing before Magistrate Peter Kuskie began at Rockhampton Magistrates Court on Monday and ran for two days.
Nineteen witnesses were cross-examined in person and by video link, including relatives of Cox and Ms Black, as well as passengers on a flight from Rockhampton to Brisbane on August 8 that Cox had travelled on.
At the hearing’s conclusion on July 28, Magistrate Kuskie said the evidence was sufficient to put Cox on trial for an indictable offence. Cox did not enter a plea and was committed for trial before a jury in the criminal sittings of the Rockhampton Supreme Court of Queensland, on a date yet to be determined. He was remanded in custody.
