Canterbury-Bankstown Mayor Bilal El-Hayek has hosted the largest Mayor’s Lights Out Sleepout, at Belmore Sports Ground.

Around 100 people joined Mayor El-Hayek as he slept outside to raise awareness and vital funds to support those experiencing homelessness.

Over the past four years, the Sleepout has raised more than $160,000, with this year seeing the community raise a record-breaking $82,000, smashing our original $30,000 fundraising goal.

Mayor El-Hayek said every dollar raised at this year’s event would support frontline charities Mission Australia, Maronites on Mission and Brothers in Need.

“There’s still about a week left to donate and support these pivotal frontline charities,” Mayor El-Hayek said.

“I am absolutely blown away by how much support we’ve had this year, especially with how tough today’s economic climate has been.

“With attendees given only a ‘cardboard tent’ for shelter, my Sleepout was about coming together in solidarity and, for one night, and experiencing first-hand the harsh reality that some in our community face.”

During last week’s event, Mayor El-Hayek gave a special thanks to Canterbury Leagues Club CEO Greg Pickering, who alone raised more than $43,000.

The Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs has partnered with the Mayor’s Lights Out Sleepout since 2024.
