According to BBC News, Olympic champion Rhys McClenaghan finished sixth in the men’s pommel horse final at the 2026 Commonwealth Games after a routine he said “didn’t go to plan”. The Northern Ireland gymnast scored 13.000 at the Glasgow International Arena.
The 27-year-old had qualified third with 14.500 and was seeking to become Team Northern Ireland’s third medallist of the Games. McClenaghan, who won Commonwealth gold on the Gold Coast in 2018 and silver in Birmingham four years later, failed to win a Games medal for the first time.
His routine was affected from the start, with the first skill not counted. McClenaghan nearly came off the apparatus late in the performance, while his score appeal was rejected. His difficulty score was 5.200 and execution score 7.800, both down on his qualifying marks.
“I didn’t have a great start. They didn’t count the first skill so that dismantled the whole routine,” McClenaghan told BBC Sport NI. He said he tried to continue but that “the leg splits happened” near the end.
Canada’s Jordan Carroll won gold with 15.00. Scotland’s Reuben Ward took silver on 14.966, while Cameron Lynn claimed bronze with 13.833. McClenaghan said the result was a “stepping stone” before the European Championships in a couple of weeks, the World Championships in October and his longer-term aim of retaining Olympic gold in Los Angeles.
