According to BBC News, Brian McDermott wants to remain England head coach through the 2030 Rugby League World Cup. The 56-year-old was appointed in April on a short-term agreement to lead England at this autumn’s tournament in Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

McDermott, who won eight trophies in eight years as Leeds Rhinos head coach, said there had been an informal discussion about a longer-term role. He said he would like another chance at a World Cup in four years’ time, with a full preparation period to build a programme year by year and connect players to it.

England have had limited preparation for the tournament, with no matches scheduled before their World Cup opener against Tonga in Perth on 17 October. McDermott, who is also an assistant coach at NRL club Gold Coast Titans, has taken the England post on a part-time basis, unlike his full-time predecessor Shaun Wane.

McDermott said England were in good shape but described recent months coordinating preparations as a “crazy, crazy period”. He has confirmed Sean O’Loughlin and Paul Wellens as assistant coaches, while George Williams will remain captain. The Warrington half-back returned in August after four months out with a neck injury and is set to join NRL club Dolphins after the World Cup.
