According to ABC News, the first passengers using Melbourne Airport’s new pick-up and drop-off zones welcomed the arrangements, with many saying the area was less congested than the former road network.
The airport’s departure ramp outside terminals 1, 2 and 3 closed the previous night after more than 50 years of operation. Its replacement is a combined pick-up and drop-off facility in the multi-level car park, linked to terminals by a walkway bridge. The facility, bridge and supporting road network cost $500 million.
Passengers told ABC News the change had been smooth, describing the area as easy to use, convenient and spacious. One traveller said traffic flowed more easily, while a driver said the new zone felt safer and another said dropping passengers off was easier.
The redesign has prompted concerns over a longer walk for elderly travellers and people with mobility issues. Melbourne Airport spokesperson Andrew Lund said assistance, including buggies and wheelchairs, was available and had been used regularly on the first morning. Dozens of additional staff have been rostered on for the coming weeks to help people navigate the layout.
Drivers must now leave the Tullamarine Freeway earlier via the Naarm Way exit. The zone serves passengers flying with Qantas, Virgin Australia and international services. Melbourne Airport said the change will allow work to begin on its $4.5 billion international terminal expansion.
