Arabic version: ميلوني تناقش أزمة الطاقة مع أمير قطر في الدوحة

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni met with Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani in Doha to address the ongoing energy crisis linked to the United States and Israeli war on Iran. This meeting took place on Saturday and is part of Meloni’s regional tour, which began in Saudi Arabia and includes a subsequent visit to the United Arab Emirates.

According to Al Jazeera, the leaders discussed energy issues and explored potential measures to mitigate the impacts of the crisis. Meloni emphasized Italy’s readiness to assist in the rehabilitation of Qatar’s energy infrastructure, which is vital for global energy security.

Italy relies heavily on energy imports and is alarmed by the rising prices caused by Iran’s effective blocking of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical route for global oil and liquefied natural gas. The Qatari emir’s office highlighted the importance of political dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate the current situation in the Middle East and ensure energy security.

The two leaders also reviewed bilateral cooperation, particularly in economic and energy sectors. Meloni’s visit marks her as the first leader from a European Union or NATO country to engage with regional leaders since the war began at the end of February. This trip aims to strengthen ties and reiterate Italy’s support against Iranian attacks, which have included targeting Qatar’s energy facilities.

Following her discussions in Doha, Meloni proceeded to the United Arab Emirates, where she was welcomed by President Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.
