Arabic version: سياسة ميلوني الخارجية تعكس التناقضات في صراع غزة
Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s stance on the Gaza conflict has evolved significantly since her early political career. In 2014, she expressed outrage over the massacre of children in Gaza, stating, “No cause is fair when it sheds the blood of the innocent.” However, more than a decade later, her remarks have become increasingly cautious and ambiguous, frustrating many Italians. According to Al Jazeera, her recent comments have reflected a tendency to avoid clear condemnation or support regarding the ongoing conflict.
Earlier this month, Italy announced the suspension of the automatic renewal of its defence pact with Israel, leading some to believe that Meloni’s government was responding to the moral implications of the situation in Gaza. However, this decision followed a direct incident involving Italian UN peacekeepers, rather than a response to the humanitarian crisis that has resulted in significant Palestinian casualties and destruction.
The Italian government’s actions suggest a pattern of responding to political calculations rather than humanitarian concerns. For instance, Meloni’s previous criticisms of U.S. President Donald Trump arose only after he made an insulting comment about Pope Leo XIV, highlighting her prioritization of domestic political dynamics over consistent foreign policy principles.
Public sentiment in Italy appears to be shifting, with many citizens expressing unease over the scale of civilian suffering in Gaza. Surveys indicate that only 11 percent of Italians currently view Israel as an ally, presenting a potential political risk for Meloni as she navigates her leadership grounded in nationalist pride.
Despite suspending the defence pact, Italy continues to maintain significant economic ties with Israel, including arms contracts and technological cooperation. This inconsistency raises questions about the true motivations behind the government’s symbolic gestures. The contradictions in Meloni’s approach to foreign policy reflect broader European challenges in balancing moral considerations with pragmatic alliances, particularly in the context of the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
