A young man detained under mental health laws spent more than 100 hours in the emergency department at Westmead Hospital before he was able to get a bed in a mental health facility in Cumberland Hospital. He checked in just after 10:20 AM on March 1 and finally received a bed at 9:25 PM on March 5. This incident highlights ongoing issues within New South Wales’ mental health system.
According to ABC News, another man waited four days and 13 hours before a bed was available. Medical professionals have expressed concerns, with one doctor anonymously stating that such prolonged waits are “akin to torture.”
Cumberland Hospital, the largest mental health facility in Australia, is currently under administration following two separate abscondings that resulted in fatalities. The facility is scheduled to close in 2027, with plans for a new mental health center to open nearby. Despite the hospital’s current challenges, a spokesperson for the Western Sydney Local Health District acknowledged the frustration caused by extended wait times.
Mental Health Minister Rose Jackson noted that the state government is investing significantly in mental health services, with the budget surpassing $3 billion for the first time. However, experts like Pramudie Gunaratne and Matthew Large emphasize that more funding is essential to improve care and increase the number of available beds, as Australia currently falls short of international standards for mental health resources.
