According to Cnbc, Friday’s rally was insufficient to erase weekly market losses after higher oil prices and Treasury yields renewed inflation concerns and raised expectations for a Federal Reserve rate increase. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 1.6% in the holiday-shortened week, while the S&P 500 lost 0.8% and the Nasdaq declined 0.7%.
All three indexes gained nearly 1% on Friday, ending four-session losing streaks as crude oil and bond yields eased. Still, West Texas Intermediate crude climbed more than 9% over the week after rising above $100 a barrel on Thursday for the first time in nearly four months. The 10-year Treasury yield also exceeded 4.95% Thursday, its highest level since October 2023.
Inflation data did little to calm concerns before the Fed’s Sept. 15-16 meeting. The producer price index increased 0.4% for the month, while headline consumer inflation rose 0.4% month over month and 3.4% from a year earlier. Core CPI, excluding food and energy, rose 0.3% for the month. CME FedWatch tool odds of a September rate hike reached 87%, up from 58% a week earlier.
Meta Platforms and Apple provided positive developments for long-term artificial intelligence opportunities. Meta released its Muse Spark 1.3 model on Sept. 2 and launched the Muse personal AI agent, which integrates with Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp. Meta shares gained 5% last week. Apple shares rose nearly 4% after the company launched the foldable iPhone Duo, starting at $1,999, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Apple CEO John Ternus described the iPhone as an “intelligent personal hub,” with an AI-upgraded Siri able to access more than 300,000 apps.
