According to The Guardian, Daniel Vasquez, the partner of NSW police officer Mia Lay, said he had lost the “love of my life” after she died in a car crash while on duty. Lay died in Sydney on Friday.

In a statement issued on behalf of her family, Vasquez said Lay loved working in the police and was happy in the role. He said she was good at her job and loved by people in the community, describing her as kind-hearted and asking that she be remembered.

Elsewhere in New South Wales, drone operators detected 1,225 sharks at patrolled beaches between 1 July and 31 August, with patrols picking up an average of 20 sharks a day over winter. The sightings led to 360 safety measures, including water evacuations, swimmer and surfer alarms, and inflatable boat and jetski deployments.

Surf Life Saving NSW recorded 49,000 drone flights, totalling 16,150 hours and covering 343,000km. The NSW government released the figures as it expanded aerial surveillance for the school holidays, describing the effort as the world’s largest and most advanced aerial shark surveillance program.

In federal politics, deputy Liberal leader Jane Hume said there were competing arguments over copyright protections and artificial intelligence. She said protections for authors, artists and journalists were fundamentally important, while Australia should also avoid missing access to frontier AI models.
