According to ABC News, Brisbane defeated Collingwood by 63 points at the MCG, 25.9 (159) to 15.6 (96), to take a strong grip on third place and a top-four AFL finish. The reigning premiers entered the final round with a 2.2 per cent edge over Hawthorn and extended that advantage to 4.4 per cent.
Logan Morris kicked eight goals in a dominant attacking display, including four before halftime. Conor McKenna added four goals, with the Irishman producing a toe-poked effort from a tight angle and a no-look snap from close to 50 metres. Oscar Allen also kicked four goals, while Eric Hipwood finished with three.
Lachie Neale led Brisbane’s midfield with 35 disposals and 16 clearances, and Josh Dunkley had 27 disposals. The Lions led by 22 points at halftime, then broke the contest open after the main break and were 75 points ahead midway through the final quarter before Collingwood kicked six straight goals.
Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said his side would have “absolutely” taken a top-four position if it had been offered at the start of the season. Collingwood coach Craig McRae said the Magpies had played “the best team in the competition”, adding that the Lions could put opponents away quickly.
Hawthorn, on 60 points, was set to play West Coast in Perth on Sunday and needed a victory by somewhere near 100 points to overtake Brisbane. Collingwood, already locked into a wildcard game, will monitor Scott Pendlebury after he was ruled out during the second quarter with a knee bursa issue.
