A re-elected Morrison government will invest $15.5 million in three significant projects to support Sydney’s Maronite community.
Our Lady of Lebanon (OLOL) parish in Harris Park, St Charbel’s parish for the Lebanese Maronite Order of Monks – Australia (LMO) and St Joseph’s Maronite Parish in Croydon play an important role in the communities in Western Sydney, with Parish halls, cafes, piety stores, and schools.
Liberal candidate for Parramatta, Maria Kovacic, has welcomed the funding.
“The Maronite community has a strong presence in our local community and the Morrison Government is supporting them to actively preserve and promote their culture and faith,” Ms Kovacic said.
“This is a substantial funding announcement and I know it will go a long way in supporting the Maronites with social and community engagement.”
$12.5 million will go to OLOL and LMO, the funding will go towards:
• $10 million for upgrades to Our Lady of Lebanon Aged Care and Wellness Centre to provide residents with user-friendly access to the Cathedral, community cafe, PCYC, childcare centre and school.
• $1.5 million for improvements to the St Charbel Aged Care Centre to develop dementia specific capability and provide upgrades to the IT and Nurse Call systems
• $1 million for the creation of a Maronite Heritage Centre
The St Joseph’s parish precinct is based around St Joseph’s church in Croydon Park.
$3 million will go to building a purpose-built Community and Youth Centre which will enhance the parish precinct and attract more people to the parish community.
Liberal Member for Reid, Dr Fiona Martin, says the expansion of the youth centre will be an asset to the area.
“We want our young people engaged and connected to friends, family and their community and this new centre will provide a safe and fun place to do just that,” Dr Martin said.
Member for Mitchell, Minister Alex Hawke, said the Coalition Government would continue to support cultural diversity across the country.
“The Morrison Government has worked hard to get Australia to a place where we can invest in, and support, all our wonderful cultures and religions across Western Sydney and this will remain a priority for us.”
Only the Morrison Government has a plan to continue delivering a strong economy and a stronger future for the residents of Parramatta and Reid.
