According to The Guardian, governor general Sam Mostyn has raised concerns about what she describes as a “growing catastrophe” undermining democratic participation in Australia.

Two years into her role representing King Charles, Australia’s head of state, Mostyn said she had observed a “woeful lack of understanding” among adults about the civic foundations of the country’s democracy. She identified the constitution as a starting point for that understanding.

Mostyn spoke with political editor Tom McIlroy at Admiralty House in Sydney for the Australian Politics podcast. The discussion covered her decision to focus on wide-ranging civics education suited to modern Australia.

The governor general’s focus is intended to address concerns that limited civic knowledge could weaken participation in democratic life.
