According to ABC News, a 71-year-old Ballarat man died after his motorcycle struck a pothole on the Western Highway at Trawalla in Victoria’s south-west on Sunday afternoon.

Victoria Police said emergency services were called after reports that the motorcycle hit a pothole and lost control at about 12:50pm. The rider died at the scene.

Police said the exact circumstances surrounding the crash had not yet been determined and would be investigated.

All westbound lanes were closed on the Western Freeway between Windermere and Beaufort. Police urged anyone with dashcam footage to contact Crime Stoppers.

The crash came days after a Victorian auditor-general report found almost half of the state’s road network was in poor condition and deteriorating faster than the government could repair it.
