Mount Gambier’s unique sculpture, dubbed the ‘Blue Blob’, has transitioned from a source of controversy to a point of interest for locals and tourists alike. This peculiar blue structure, which was installed in July 2026 at a cost of $136,000, symbolizes the region’s aquifers and megafauna. Initially met with skepticism, community opposition to Cast in Blue appears to be diminishing as more visitors come to see it.
According to ABC News, the sculpture faced significant backlash upon its unveiling, igniting debates about the appropriateness of such art in the city. Despite the early negative sentiments, the attention has also drawn tourists, with local officials noting increased interaction with the artwork.
The city’s Beacon Art Project, aimed at enhancing public art in Mount Gambier, led to the creation of Cast in Blue by Huna Studio. The project has not only attracted visitors but also sparked discussions among residents about public art’s role in community identity. Some, like art educator Ruth Stephenson, argue that engaging in dialogue about the sculpture has helped foster appreciation.
Despite the initial criticism, including vandalism incidents, the sculpture has generated a line of merchandise that has quickly sold out. Mayor Lynette Martin highlighted the positive impact on tourism, stating that the sculpture has become a focal point for engagement in the community. While opinions remain divided, many locals now recognize the value of Cast in Blue as a unique addition to Mount Gambier’s cultural landscape.
