According to ABC News, a 42-year-old man has been charged with murder after allegedly assaulting another man at a private residence in Railton, in Tasmania’s north. Police said the 48-year-old victim, a man from Railton, later died at the Royal Hobart Hospital.

Tasmania Police said emergency services attended the residence shortly after 8.30am on Wednesday following reports that a man had been assaulted. Railton is south of Devonport.

Police said the alleged offender had left the scene before officers arrived. He was arrested a short time later at a nearby location, according to a police statement.

Authorities said the victim and the offender were known to each other. Police also said there was no ongoing threat to the wider community following the incident.

On Thursday night, police said the Tarleton man had been charged with murder after the victim’s death. He was set to appear in the Devonport Magistrates Court on Thursday night.
