Albany musician Eddy Jay has embraced 3D printing to create musical instruments, starting with a concertina after a challenge from his father. According to ABC News, Jay, a professional accordionist, utilized his knowledge of instrument mechanics to design and produce concertinas, which he has been making for the past six years.
Initially, Jay faced skepticism, including from his father, who had long desired to build his own concertina. After several prototypes, Jay successfully created a functional model, leading him to sell multiple instruments worldwide. His journey into 3D printing not only resulted in unique concertinas but also a special connection with his wife, Josephine, for whom he crafted a distinctive violin.
Josephine described the sound of the 3D-printed violin as “velvety smooth,” appreciating its unique quality compared to traditional wooden instruments. Eddy Jay continues to refine his designs, experimenting with materials like carbon fiber to enhance sound quality.
In addition to crafting instruments, Eddy Jay holds workshops to share his 3D printing expertise, contributing to a growing trend in Australia where musicians are increasingly using technology to produce instruments. He hopes to expand his craft by integrating CNC technology to create wooden instruments, marking a return to traditional materials while utilizing modern techniques.
