According to ABC News, Narromine in western New South Wales has transformed into “Dollymine” for its annual October festival honouring Dolly Parton, who died in August aged 80.
The town of 3,500 residents traded farm workwear for pink, rhinestones and platinum-blonde styles as visitors gathered for what organiser Skye Rush described as the festival’s largest event yet. Natasha Kelly, from Dubbo, stayed up until 4am sewing rhinestones into her family’s Dolly-inspired outfits.
The volunteer-run festival began in 2022 and was cancelled in 2024 after funding challenges. It was revived with a $150,000 state government grant and support from the local council. Rush said the event filled local shops and accommodation, while reflecting Parton’s support for small towns and her roots.
Visitors travelled from around Australia despite Narromine being five and a half hours’ drive north-west of Sydney. Best-dressed judge Dolly Delicious, who travelled from Canberra, said Parton’s death had made him sad but also eager to celebrate her music and looks.
Newlyweds Sam and Amber Bloem, from Bourke, attended with their children after using Parton’s Imagination Library. Narromine Elder Aunty Ruth said Parton represented a great deal to the town, while visitor Johnny Gilmore said he valued supporting regional communities and enjoyed Parton’s music.
