Arabic version: حلفاء الناتو يتضامنون مع إسبانيا بعد تهديدات الولايات المتحدة
European leaders have rallied to support Spain after a leaked email from the US Pentagon suggested potential punitive measures against the country for its stance on the US-Israel campaign against Iran. The email indicated that the US might suspend Spain from Nato, a claim that has sparked widespread concern among European allies. According to BBC News, Spain’s Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez sought to reassure the press during a summit in Cyprus, insisting that Spain is fulfilling its Nato obligations.
The email’s contents have been met with strong opposition from other European leaders, who have emphasized Spain’s commitment to the alliance. Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten stated that Spain would remain a full Nato member, underlining the importance of unity within the organization. A senior German official also affirmed that there is no basis for changing Spain’s membership status.
Tensions have been heightened by the backdrop of the ongoing energy crisis and the conflict in Ukraine, with Prime Minister Sanchez having previously criticized US-Israeli military actions as illegal under international law. This has reportedly angered former President Donald Trump, who has threatened potential trade sanctions and expressed dissatisfaction with Spain’s refusal to increase defense spending.
The situation reflects broader concerns about the cohesion of Nato, particularly as European nations face increasing threats from Russia. The discord has prompted discussions about whether the US would support its allies in the event of an attack, raising questions about the future of transatlantic relations. As European leaders navigate these challenges, the unity and operational effectiveness of Nato remain critical to regional security.
