Janice Nix was convicted of manslaughter for the death of her five-year-old stepdaughter, Andrea Bernard, who died after being scalded in a hot bath in 1978. Nix, now 67, denied the charges but was convicted following a trial that revealed the horrific circumstances surrounding the case. According to BBC News, Andrea suffered serious burns to half of her body and died in the hospital on 13 July 1978, five weeks after the incident.

The jury heard that Andrea’s death had been treated as an accident until her older brother, Desmond Bernard, came forward in 2022. Bernard testified that Nix frequently abused the children, punishing them for minor infractions. He described a particularly harrowing incident on 6 June 1978, when Nix became furious with Andrea for not following instructions and subsequently forced her into a scalding bath.

Bernard recounted hearing Nix shout at Andrea and the subsequent screams that filled the house. After the incident, he claimed Nix asked him to lie about what happened, urging him to say it was an accident. Bernard, now 56, expressed that he initially complied out of fear but later felt compelled to reveal the truth to seek justice for his sister.

In a statement after the verdict, Bernard expressed a sense of justice and accountability for the tragic events that unfolded nearly five decades ago. He emphasized that while no verdict could bring Andrea back, it serves as a reminder that such acts of cruelty have consequences. David Malone, a deputy chief crown prosecutor, noted the difficulty of building a case so long after the events occurred, highlighting the importance of Bernard’s testimony in securing the conviction.
