NATO’s Chief Commander, General Alexus Grynkewich, stated that the alliance’s response to a stray drone incident over Estonia was effective, asserting, “Everything worked”. This incident involved NATO jets successfully shooting down the drone, which has raised questions about air security in the region. Grynkewich emphasized that the system operated as intended, reassuring allies of NATO’s defensive capabilities.

According to The Guardian, the commander also confirmed the planned withdrawal of 5,000 US troops from Europe, aligning with Trump’s plans. He reassured that these adjustments would not hinder NATO’s operational capabilities in the region.

Grynkewich hinted at a future redeployment of US troops as European allies enhance their military capabilities. He noted that as the European pillar of NATO strengthens, the US could reduce its presence, focusing on providing capabilities that allies cannot yet fulfill. This process is expected to unfold over several years, with troop levels varying as nations meet their defense spending commitments.

The NATO commander rejected claims from Russia that NATO poses an offensive threat, reiterating that the alliance is fundamentally defensive. He responded to accusations of Ukrainian drones being launched from Baltic airspace, stating that if such actions were taking place, NATO would not be intercepting those drones.
