Arabic version: ابن الأخ يشارك المشاعر المعقدة بعد وفاة ديزي فريمان
According to ABC News,
Luke Filby, the nephew of Dezi Freeman, expressed his conflicted feelings following his uncle’s death at the hands of officers from Victoria Police’s specialist operations group. Speaking to ABC News, Filby described a mix of relief and sorrow, stating, “Now it’s come to an end … it is a sigh of relief.” He noted that his emotions are difficult to articulate, reflecting a blend of hurt and a sense of closure.
Filby, who had been estranged from Freeman for several years, was taken aback by the news of his uncle’s violent end during a standoff with police at an isolated property on the NSW-Victoria border. He agreed with Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan’s characterization of Freeman as “an evil man,” acknowledging the darker aspects of his uncle’s personality.
The standoff occurred at a shipping container where Freeman had been living. Police, having received a tip-off, monitored the situation for at least a day before attempting to negotiate his surrender. After three hours, Freeman emerged draped in bedding, revealing a Victoria Police-issued handgun, which led to the fatal confrontation.
Filby mentioned that his mother, Freeman’s sister, is devastated by the news, expressing her distress during a recent conversation. He emphasized that he is speaking out for the sake of Freeman’s children and other family members, allowing them to grieve without the burden of his uncle’s legacy overshadowing their mourning.
As the investigation continues, police are working to gather evidence at the scene and interview local residents, including the property owner. Filby reflected on the lessons from his uncle’s life, suggesting that Freeman lost sight of what truly mattered due to paranoia and conspiracy theories. “He couldn’t appreciate the things that he could have loved, like even his family,” Filby stated, indicating a desire to move forward from this painful chapter in their family’s history.
