Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has expressed support for the ceasefire announced between the United States and Iran, although he emphasized that Israel’s military objectives remain unfulfilled. According to BBC News, Netanyahu’s initial declaration of military operations against Iran at the end of February was optimistic, but the tone of his recent statement reflected a more cautious approach.

The ceasefire, which followed five weeks of conflict, was characterized by triumphal claims from both the US and Iran, who asserted significant victories. However, Netanyahu acknowledged that the ceasefire does not signify an end to hostilities, indicating that Israel still has goals to achieve, either through negotiations or renewed military action.

Despite the military campaign, Iran’s military presence remains intact, and its nuclear program is unresolved. Although some of Iran’s missile capabilities have been degraded, missile alerts continued in Israel even after the ceasefire announcement, highlighting ongoing threats.

Criticism of Netanyahu’s handling of the situation has grown, with opposition leader Yair Lapid labeling the outcome a political disaster for Israel. Lapid claimed that Israel was excluded from critical discussions regarding national security, while military objectives set by Netanyahu have not been realized. As the political landscape shifts in Israel, Netanyahu faces potential challenges from both his coalition and the electorate.

The ceasefire’s terms have also sparked debate regarding its applicability to Lebanon, where Israel has conducted extensive airstrikes against Hezbollah. While the US and Iran’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif asserted that the ceasefire includes Lebanon, Netanyahu’s office disagreed, stating that it does not. This disagreement raises concerns about the stability of the ceasefire, as Israel continues military operations in the region, leading to significant casualties and displacement in Lebanon.
