Arabic version: نتفليكس تختبر مسارًا جديدًا للعرض السينمائي
According to Cnbc, Netflix is reaffirming its streaming-first model while expanding a selective theatrical strategy. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos said the company’s content is intended for subscribers and should reach its streaming platform quickly, even as Netflix plans 30 theatrical releases in 2027, matching its 2026 cinema output.
Netflix will test longer and wider releases with Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” set for a February debut with a 49-day exclusive theatrical window. Sarandos described the approach as “specialty theatrical releasing,” with each film receiving a bespoke plan. Some titles may play only long enough to qualify for awards, while others could be limited event releases.
The company is also preparing longer theatrical runs for “Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory,” Sarandos said, citing both films’ global intellectual property and fandom. Netflix has said it will report box-office results for films with longer theatrical windows, adding a level of disclosure that is standard for major studios.
The strategy arrives as Netflix seeks growth and better execution in the U.S. Sarandos told investors that the business is working but needs more “home runs.” Netflix recently reshaped its content leadership, naming former Disney executive Peter Rice chief content officer and removing Bela Bajaria from the role. Dan Lin, head of film, was also dismissed, according to a person familiar with the matter.
Analysts said theatrical releases could support streaming demand, talent relationships and fan bases around Netflix intellectual property. But Netflix lacks the infrastructure of a full theatrical operation, including distribution, theater negotiations, marketing and a pipeline designed for cinemas. The company has also resisted the large marketing costs associated with traditional studio releases.
