A new exhibition titled “Marilyn Monroe: Hollywood Icon” opens this weekend at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures in Los Angeles, showcasing the complex relationship Monroe had with her fame. This exhibit features personal items that have never been publicly displayed before, offering a glimpse into the actress’s private life.

According to The Guardian, one of the most striking elements of the exhibition is an audio recording of Monroe’s final interview, where she reflects on her feelings about fame. “With fame, you can read about yourself and somebody else’s ideas about you, but what’s important is how you feel about you, for survival and living day to day with oneself,” she said in 1962. This moment encapsulates the tension between her public persona and her private struggles.

The exhibition includes a variety of intimate belongings, such as letters, notes, and personal effects, alongside iconic costumes. Among the highlights is the pink dress worn in “The Seven Year Itch,” which has rarely been displayed, as well as an elaborately sequined outfit from a charity event where she famously rode in on an elephant.

Curated by Sophia Serrano, the exhibition aims to present Monroe in a unique light, different from other tributes celebrating her centenary this year. The gallery is designed with a glamorous aesthetic, featuring a red carpet and multimedia displays that underscore her status as “America’s sweetheart.”

Visitors will also see items that reflect Monroe’s private thoughts and challenges, including her musings on sincerity and her rejection of a film role about Sigmund Freud. The exhibit runs from 31 May 2026 to 28 February 2027, inviting audiences to explore the complexities behind the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe.
