The New York Jets’ nightmare start to the 2025 NFL season hit a new low after they earned themselves a 0-7 record after losing to the Carolina Panthers in a home game at a half-empty MetLife Stadium, adding pressure on first-season head coach Aaron Glenn.
Despite losing all seven games so far this season, most of them have been narrow losses. The Jets haven’t suffered many blowouts, but when it comes to the reasons for the lack of wins, there are many. Jets owner Woody Johnson called out the poor performance of QB Justin Fields for the poor start to the year, but added that other areas of the team are doing okay.
“Well, it looks like (Glenn is) turning around parts of it,” Johnson said. “It’s hard when you have a quarterback with a rating that he’s got. I mean, he has ability, but something is just not jiving. But if you look at any head coach of a quarterback like that, you’re going to see similar results if you were across the league. You have to play consistently at that position, and that’s what we’re going to try to do.”
“I just think defence, special teams are doing better,” Johnson said on Tuesday. “Defence is pretty good. If we can just complete a pass, it would look good.”
During the game with the Panthers, Fields was benched in favour of backup QB Tyrod Taylor after Fields showed poor performance, after starting 6-of-12 for only 46 yards. Head coach Glenn told reporters after the game why he benched Fields. “Listen, we needed a spark,” Glenn highlighted.
But Taylor neither performed much better than Fields, only completing 10 of 22 passes for 126 yards and throwing two interceptions.
The Jets now face a challenge and a must-win game in Cincinnati when they face the Bengals at Paycor Stadium on October 27. The Bengals also face challenges of their own, with QB Joe Burrow ruled out due to injury and Joe Flacco stepping up, with the Bengals’ record also not strong at 3-4. Can the Jets give the Bengals a surprise defeat?
